KOLHAPUR: Medical history was created last week when a 52-year-old woman played the role of surrogate mother and gave birth to her grandson at a hospital here. Rani Patil, a young woman from Sangli, was unable to have children as she suffered from Rokitansky syndrome (where the uterus is absent, but other organs like the ovaries, are functional). Her mother, Saibai, volunteered to act as a surrogate mother for her and successfully gave birth to her grandson at Patki hospital last week.
Surrogacy, though still in its infancy in India, is not completely new to doctors in this country. Three years ago Dr Naina Patel successfully used the technique in Gujarat.
Now, Dr Satish Patki, a fertility specialist from Kolhapur, helped Rani realise her dream. "As pregnancy is impossible in such cases, we suggested that Rani and her husband, Rajesh, go in for surrogacy," said Patki. This is Saibai's fourth delivery. She also has two sons. Patki said in such cases, it is difficult to find someone who will to act as surrogate mother, as the contract is binding for the whole nine months and the delivery may be life-threatening. After playing the role of mother for nine months, Saibai has returned to the role of grandmother and eagerly awaits the christening of the new-born. "We distributed sweets in the hospital immediately after the birth of the baby. Now Rajesh and Rani will decide what to call him," Saibai said.
